The umbilical cord can be the site of infection. This can happen if the cord is severed to close to the abdominal wall. When it is cut too close there is no stump to wither and separate cleanly and the navel will become infected. Queens with dental infection can also transmit bacteria to the umbilical cord when she severs it as well as an unclean birth area. The dirt or bacteria gets absorbed through the open navel and septicaemia is likely to set in.
